We are seeking an Electrical Engineer to join our Generation Design Department.  Under the direction of the Apparatus & Protection Section – Team A lead, responsible for the detailed design of generation apparatus, control and protection, station ac and dc distribution and auxiliary systems for generating stations. The position involves carrying out a variety of engineering assignments which requires familiarity with broad fields of generation system engineering. 



Prepare designs for generation apparatus, protection, and auxiliary systems for generating stations. These systems include AC and DC distribution systems, protection devices, generator step-up transformers, generator circuit breakers, battery banks & chargers, motors/pumps, diesel generators, generator and transformer protection, and grounding. 

Verify accuracy of detail in drawing packages, oversee the preparation of drawing packages and bill of materials.

Perform design calculations as required for designs of apparatus, protection and auxiliary systems. 

Prepare studies, reports, recommendations, estimates and contribute to scope development. 

Prepare equipment and/or construction specifications as required.

Evaluate tenders and prepare recommendations for purchase of electrical equipment.

Prepare instruction manuals, commissioning procedures and commissioning reports.

Prepare arc flash hazard assessments and calculations & review assessments prepared by others.

Review manufacturer's drawings for manufacture and subsequent field installation of equipment, involving direct liaison with the manufacturer.

Witness manufacturer's factory and site tests on equipment, as required.

Perform a coordinating function on assigned projects for which the department has responsibility.

Liaise with others in Asset Planning and Delivery for correlation of design data, drawing preparation and purchase/delivery of equipment.

Liaise with other Divisions to ensure that construction and commissioning meet design standards.

Review consulting engineer’s designs and advise consulting engineers of Manitoba Hydro requirements.

Provide construction support, as required. 

Make occasional site visits to gather design information and to ensure conformance of construction with design.

Assist or lead commissioning aspects, as required.

Keep abreast of new products, standards and test methods.



Graduate in Electrical Engineering from a University of recognized standing with a minimum of four years Electrical Engineering experience.

Membership as a Professional Engineer in Engineers Geoscientist Manitoba. 

Previous experience in design of apparatus, protection and auxiliary systems for generating stations would be an asset.

Knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code.

Basic knowledge of AC and DC systems, conductor and protection device sizing. 

Basic knowledge of circuit breakers, transformers, motors/pumps, grounding, and arc flash assessments and calculations. 

Capable of planning and executing work assignments under supervision.

Capable of communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.

Proven ability to work collaboratively and effectively with others and participates on project teams.  

Willingness to travel as required.
