PRIVATE HOME PLACEMENT COUNSELLOR

Authority

The Private Home Placement (PHP) Counsellor reports directly to the Assistant Director of

Instructional Services.

Purpose

The Private Home Placement (PHP) Program Counsellor is responsible to provide support to

students and parents in the PHP program in Manitoba First Nation School System (MFNSS)

schools. The PHP Counsellor also provides assistance to the PHP Coordinator in terms of

initiatives relating to student enrollment, student retention, and providing on-going support to

students.

Specific Responsibilities

1. Provide an orientation to students and parents;

2. Provide transition programming to all new students;

3. Recruit caring and responsible house parents;

4. Register all new students at receiving school;

5. Provide liaison services to community agencies and to the community on student and family

specific issues as required;

6. Arrange travel for students;

7. Monitor the transition of students from middle years to high school;

8. Maintain proper student records and reports as per school and MFNSS requirements;

9. Attend meetings pertaining to students, parents, and house parents to address challenges

facing students while they are in the program;

10. Coordinate counselling and liaison activities to meet the needs of the individual students;

11. Provide recreational and cultural activities throughout the school year;

12. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Skills and Experience

1. Minimum Grade 12 Diploma;

2. Applied counselling certificate or working towards a certification will be considered an

asset;

3. Knowledge of high school programming;

4. Basic knowledge of record keeping and report writing;

5. Minimum of two years administrative experience with First Nations directly related

experience and/or training in a high school setting;

6. Ability to develop and maintain effective contact and communication with students,

agencies, parents/guardians, and school administrators;

7. Excellent interpersonal and cross cultural skills to work in a First Nations environment;

8. Proven effective oral and written communication skills in technical and plain language

writing, and presentation skills;

9. Fluency in a First Nations language is considered an asset;

10. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications;

11. Ability to work independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team of

professionals;

12. Excellent written communication skills and ability to communicate;

13. Possess a valid Class 5 driver’s license;

14. Flexible to travel to MFNSS schools throughout Manitoba;

15. Satisfactory Criminal Record/Vulnerable Sector and Child Abuse Registry checks.
