Job Summary
The Signals and Communications Installations Supervisor is responsible for managing the operation of an assigned territory. The role involves installing, repairing and testing various signal and communication systems including railway signaling systems, wayside information systems, and highway grade crossing protection systems. The position also oversees a team of unionized employees and participates in on-boarding new Signals and Communications apprentices.
Main Responsibilities

  • Manage Engineering Operations as outlined in CN’s operating plan
  • Ensure compliance with safe work procedures, Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) guidelines, and CN policies and procedures
  • Manage budgets and workforce productivity within CN and as per departmental policy
  • Participate in activities related to derailments and disruptions in service, while working with appropriate stakeholders to determine cause and future prevention
  • Participate in investigations when necessary
  • Provide field and technical support to install signal and crossing warning functions within the railway system


  • Carry out daily supervision of assigned staff
  • Lead people with clear direction and goals while providing coaching and guidance to employees through regular monitoring of performance
  • Apply Collective Agreements and company policies, including managing and coaching employees, conducting investigations, recommending corrective action, and responding to grievances
  • Facilitate on-boarding of new Signals and Communications apprentices as well as evaluations

Working Conditions
The role has standard working conditions partially in an office environment (25%) and mainly performed outdoors (75%) in various types of weather and environmental conditions with an irregular work week from Monday to Sunday. The shifts include irregular hours, including nights weekends and holidays. The role requires being available on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidences. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure and manage stress. The incumbent must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. The role requires frequent travel (50%).
Regulatory and Safety Environment 

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in similar working conditions or in a regulatory and safety environment
  • Demonstrated experience in safety compliance
  • Proven track record in troubleshooting and problem-solving
  • Experience managing budgets*
  • Experience supervising a unionized workforce*
  • Labour Relations experience*

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • Post-Secondary Degree*
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Must meet all medical fitness for duty requirements for the position
  • Training or Certification in Railroad Operating Signals*

Technical Skills/Knowledge

  • Understanding of train scheduling and Railroad Operating rules
  • Knowledge of Signals and Communications
  • Ability to stay alert and prepared for unusual conditions or circumstances
  • Understanding and application of safety standards, policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of Collective Agreements as well as Operating Rules
  • General Microsoft Computer Skills*
