Position Description:

Under the direction of the Operations Manager and in accordance with the Centre's philosophy, goals, and standards of practice, the Trauma Counselor/Facilitator functions as a member of a team in providing highly specialized supportive services to indigenous women and their children, who have experienced trauma, family violence, and are currently involved with the Federal Criminal Justice system.  All support and programming will assist the Residents in their efforts to successfully reintegrate back into the community.

Qualifications required:

Bachelor of Social Work/Degree in the Social Sciences and at least two years experience working with Indigenous populations.  IWHC reserves the right to consider any combination of education, work and life experience that they deem equivalent.

Comprehensive knowledge and skilla uaing Trauma Informed counseling methodologies.

Knowledge and understanding of issues in the area of family violence, child welfare, criminal justice as it pertains to Indigenous women and children.

Awareness of the effects of prolonged exposure to these factors.

Ability to multi-task in a fast paced, often stressful situation.

Must have the skills to understand the dynamics of offender behavior and assess their needs and risks.

The skills to counsel residents/offenders, form effective relationships and gain trust.

The skills to understand the use of authority in supervision and to intervene effectively in crisis situations.

Must have the ability to assist in identifying and solving the practical problems in reintegration back into the community

Must be able to handle stressful situations in a deescalating manner.

Excellent assesment and problem solving skills as well as verbal and written communication skills.

Must have good presentation/facilitation skills.

Must have good computer and data processing skills.

Knowledge of an Indigenous language or dialect a definate assest.

CPR/First Aid training certificate, a current Child Abuse/Vulnerable Persons  Registry check and must be able to pass/obtain Enhanced Security clearance.
