The Researcher works under the supervisory function of the Research and Development Director, who in turn, reports to the Associate Executive Director.


The researcher will work collaboratively with the R & D Team members on the FNCF development phase and R & D projects. The R & D Team consists of the director, administrative assistant, research assistants, curriculum development/research facilitators, researchers, curriculum writer, and a graphic designer. The main role of the researcher is to focus exclusively on conducting in-depth research on the framework development initiative specific to education transformation. 

Specific Responsibilities

·         Conducts research on the development of a framework and related research and development projects that addresses the long term vision of a First Nations education transformation;

·         Works closely with the R & D Team to assist in the development and research required of the draft framework

·         Works in cooperation with the R & D team to develop strategies that provide opportunities for inclusion of traditional knowledge systems and balanced traditional teachings within contemporary education;

·         Assists in the development of strategies for addressing First Nations education research issues related to criteria for establishing priorities and processes for action;

·         Participates and contribute to the monthly team meetings and on the First Nations Strategic Planning sessions with the R & D Team;

·         Prepares monthly activity reports, annual reports and team work plans for the current year and other reports as required;

·         Participates in making presentations to the Manitoba First Nations Education Directors and Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs Committee on Education when requested;

·         Participates in special assignments, initiatives, and projects as assigned/required;

·         Manages an independent work environment and performs other duties as assigned.


Education & Experience

·         A minimum of five years directly related experience or five years in a classroom setting and two years in research assignment;

·         Completion of a recognized post-secondary degree in applied research methods or a Bachelor of Education with some course work in research methods or equivalent education and experience;

·         Demonstrated experience working with Elders;

·         Demonstrated experience and awareness of cultural teachings;

·         Knowledge of Manitoba First Nations education development and reforms and socio-economic conditions in First Nations communities;

·         Experience working with First Nations in the field of education and research;

·         Excellent oral and written communication skills in technical and plain language writing;

·         Knowledge of the new Manitoba curriculum frameworks and strategies for implementation;

·         Computer literate in various database programs and systems;

·         Knowledge of statistical analysis and techniques;

·         Ability to communicate effectively with First Nations communities;

·         Appreciation and respect for First Nations knowledge, particularly Elder participation in education;

·         Strong time management and organizational skills and the ability to work under pressure;

·         Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks and meet all deadlines;

·         Professional behaviors that personify strong work ethics;

·         Ability to work independently and cooperatively in an interdisciplinary team of professionals;

·         Ability to speak a First Nations Languages would be an asset;

·         Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural skills to work in a First Nations environment;

·         Ability to travel to First Nation communities within Manitoba.
