POSITION OVERVIEW
The Resource Teacher is to report to the Special Education Coordinator and will support students with exceptionalities by adapting the general education curriculum for them. They accomplish this by assessing students and helping the design of individual educational program (IEPS) based on these assessments. They also help general education teachers implement these plans. They also act as a liaison between the family, the student and other educational professionals at school.
DUTIES:
· Evaluate and determine your student’s learning capacity and adapt lesson plans according to them.
· Develop individualized Education Programs (IEPS), which are learning programs designed to align more with a child’s development that wit grad-level expectations,
· Oversee teacher assistants who work with these students,
· Help general education teachers in inclusive classrooms to formulate lessons so children with special needs can comprehend them,
· Develop appropriate evaluation methods,
· Work with students as required either in a one-on-one, small group or whole group setting and shall provide tutoring assistance and support to assist the student’s academic success,
· Evaluate the progress of students and discuss student’s progress with parents, counsellors, administration and school officials as required,
· Participate in staff meetings, educational conferences, teacher training workshops, and other activities as required and assigned,
· May require working extracurricular hours,
· Other duties within scope of the position as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Bachelor of Education preferred, though a combination of relevant education, training, and experience may be considered,
· Must be certified or eligible for certification by Manitoba Education,
· Manitoba Special Education certificate, certification in progress, or commitment to qualify for a certificate as part of their job,
· Several years’ experience working with children, youth, and teens in an educational setting,
· Experience working with children with special needs is an asset,
· Ability to interpret educational and cognitive assessment,
· Proven ability to create an efficient working relationship with other education personnel,
· Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills,
· Ability to comply with written or oral instructions,
· Ability to work collaboratively with others in a participative environment or independently as required,
· Familiarity, experience and comfort with the subject material they are to teach,
· Attention to detail and the ability to write and present detailed reports,
· Proficient in maintaining efficient classroom management,
· Highly motivated and committed to student learning,
· Good team work ethics and ability to act as a role model to youth and as such it is imperative that you are living a healthy, drug-free lifestyle,
· Superior communication skills and ability to work with clients, parents and other teachers,
· Ability to work with minimal supervision,
· Posses good working ethics and habits (punctuality and attendance)
· Ability to maintain confidentiality with respect to all matters pertaining to students, staff and families in all verbal and written communications,
· Experience in conflict resolution is an asset,
· Clear criminal record and abuse registry checks,
· Valid driver’s licence and a reliable automobile.
