Authority

The Language/Technology Developer works under the supervisory function of the Languages and Cultures Coordination Team.

Purpose

The Language/Technology Developer is responsible for assisting First Nations schools in developing strategies for upgrading technology hardware and software consistent with their plan for implementation of the Provincial curriculum.  The Language/Technology Developer is also responsible for developing new and innovative strategies for utilizing computer and other technologies with First Nations students in the classroom. A demonstrated respect for First Nations knowledge, languages and cultures; and fluency in a First Nations Language is desirable for this position.

Specific Responsibilities

·         Advise school administrators, teachers and teams involved in the implementation of the new Provincial curriculum on the appropriate usage of information and communications technology (ICT) in the classroom;

·         Conduct on-site school visits for the purposes of demonstrating computer and other technology usage in the classroom;

·         Assist First Nations schools in developing strategies for upgrading and/or extending their technology hardware and software to meet curriculum and related ICT requirements;

·         Advise First Nations schools on strategies for accessing the Internet and online technology related resources as appropriate.

·         Assist in delivering informational workshops to all education stakeholders i.e. Teachers, parents, administrators, Education Authorities, Chief and Councils, students on the use of computers and other technologies in the classroom;

·         Prepare presentation materials and packages in plain language for use in community information workshops;

·         Identify classroom technology training requirements among First Nations school personnel, assist MFNERC’s Training Coordinator with the analysis and strategies to be developed;

·         Prepare monthly and quarterly activity reports, annual reports and work plans for the next year and other reports as required;

·         Manage interoffice technology and related software;

·         Supervise and conduct performance evaluations for technology staff;

·         Ensure that the community education development philosophy is part of the process utilized in the planning, development, delivery and evaluation of all related initiatives;

·         Participate in special assignments, initiatives, and projects as assigned/required;

·         Manage an independent work environment.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

·         Minimum Bachelor of Education Degree with specialization in the use of technology in the classroom, or combination of relevant education and work experience. Computer Science or Computer Engineering degree is preferred.

·         Minimum of five years of teaching experience in the subject area;

·         Demonstrated expertise in advising on the use of technology as a learning tool in the classroom;

·         Knowledge of Manitoba First Nations education development and reforms and socio-economic conditions of First Nations communities;

·         Experience working with First Nations in the field of education;

·         Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural skills to work in a First Nations environment-fluency in a First Nations language is considered an asset;

·         Excellent oral and written communication skills in technical and plain language writing;

·         Familiarity with the new Manitoba curriculum frameworks and strategies for implementation and relationship to the use of technology in the classroom, and initiative of the Manitoba Education Research and Learning Information Networks (M.E.R.L.I.N.) and the Council on Learning Technology (C.O.L.T.);

·         Wide knowledge and background in being able to focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

·         Knowledge and experience in computer programming, networking and website development are preferred. These fulfill the requirements in teaching High School computer curriculums such as Computer Science 40s/Computer Science Advanced Placement (AP).

·         Skills or teaching experience in computer programming in C, C++, Java or python is preferred. This fulfills the requirements in developing Computer Science lessons using robotics driven by microcomputer processors.

·         Experience and knowledge in website design, development and maintenance of a school website are preferred.

·         Up to date knowledge with IOS and Apple device configuration and troubleshooting.

·         Ability to foresee new technology that could be used in classrooms to benefit teaching and learning.

·         Knowledge of planning and costing technological advances towards a school and an educational institute.

·         Ability to work independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team of professionals;

·         Ability to relate to and communicate with children, parents/caregivers, and other professionals;

·         Possess a valid Class 5 Drivers License;

·         Flexible to travel to First Nations schools throughout Manitoba;

·         Criminal and child abuse record check clearance.
